Liver transplant demand for hepatocellular carcinoma patients on the rise

The number of hepatocellular carcinoma patients on waiting lists for liver transplants is rising rapidly, affecting an already limited supply of the organs in the U.S., according to Dr. Jennifer A. Flemming, who spoke at the 2013 Liver Meeting. Based on an analysis involving patients in the Scientific Registry for Transplant Recipients database between 2003 and 2010, the increase can be attributed to an average 12% annual rise in hepatocellular carcinoma cases.
