NYC study highlights middle-schoolers' literacy comprehension challenges

A recent research report from the New York City Department of Education's Middle School Quality Initiative shows that some middle-school students have trouble with comprehension of whole texts, not decoding individual words, education consultant Sheena Hervey writes this blog post. To address the challenges, Hervey suggests using collaborative, cross-disciplinary teams to teach literacy comprehension and vocabulary-building strategies in all content areas.
