Only 647,000 of 1.9 million HIV-positive children who required treatment received antiretroviral drugs in 2012, according to a UNAIDS report published on Wednesday. In India and 21 countries in sub-Saharan Africa, just 3 in 10 children who needed HIV treatment received it. "We have seen tremendous political commitment and results to reduce mother-to-child transmission, but we are failing the children who become infected," UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibe said.
