Another tunnel-boring machine joins San Francisco's Central Subway project

A tunnel-boring machine known as Mom Chung is being joined by another borer named Big Alma as they create two 1.5-mile tunnels as part of the Central Subway project in San Francisco. The machines, which both weigh 750 tons and are 350 feet long, will be excavating under 4th Street, Columbus Avenue and Stockton Street. The $1.6 billion Central Subway is slated to start operations in 2019.
