Beaujolais Nouveau ritual uncorking stirs frenzy for the young wine

At midnight on Wednesday, wine lovers participated in the tradition of uncorking bottles of this year's Beaujolais Nouveau, a young, easy-drinking wine that has garnered great popularity from the French tradition. The popularity of this wine, 47% of which is shipped abroad, has previously pushed winemakers to excess, sacrificing quality for quantity. Regional winemakers now struggle to sell other types of wine even though Beaujolais' nouveau wines account for about a third of the wine produced in the region each year.
