Digital tools may help patients overcome price-quality perceptions

Many patients equate high health care prices with high quality, and online tools and applications that show price alongside quality ratings could alleviate consumers' fear of lower-cost health care. Many such tools already available could use improvement, but insurance companies and employers that offer health plans should strongly encourage consumers to use them, according to a study by Catalyst for Payment Reform. "People are afraid of the low-cost option because they are afraid of substandard care," University of Oregon researcher Judith Hibbard said at AHIP's Operations and Technology Forum.
