The U.S. Department of Education has selected 80 school districts across 21 states as finalists for $120 million in federal grants through the Race to the Top program. The department will select 10 winning applicants to receive four-year grants of between $4 million to $30 million each. "This year's finalists created innovative plans, to drive education reform and improve student achievement, that serve as an example for the rest of the country," Secretary of Education Arne Duncan said.
