U.S. road contractors struggle to find business amid low infrastructure spending

America's highway contractors are struggling to find work due to weak public infrastructure spending, leading them to venture into other sectors including energy. Overall construction spending for highway projects was 3.3% lower in January to August of this year as compared to the same time span in 2012. The funding gap for highway construction has heightened competition and taken a bite out of contractors' profits.
