Budget official backs EPA's independence on toxic-chemical probe

The federal government will not influence the Environmental Protection Agency in testing chemicals that could disrupt the human endocrine system, said Peter Orszag, director of the White House Office of Management and Budget. Rep. Edward Markey, D-Mass., has expressed concern that OMB's statement urging the EPA to use data from private chemical companies could compromise public health. In a letter, Orszag assured Markey that "OMB fully supports the EPA's sole authority to make the scientific decisions related to this effort."
