Bootstrapping a business doesn't only release entrepreneurs from the grind of finding outside investments, it also allows them to retain control over their venture. "I wanted the flexibility to make the right decisions, free from a board or an investor's influence," said Erica Zidel, who bootstrapped her business by continuing to work as a management consultant. To avoid creating friction with your day job, don't tell your employer about your startup if possible, and make sure it doesn't conflict with your employment agreement, author Pamela Slim says.
