Root cause of thinning hair determines the treatment plan

Dermatologists should determine whether thinning hair is caused by androgenetic alopecia, aging, a hormonal imbalance, a vitamin deficiency or medication use before developing a treatment plan, says Vera Price, a professor of dermatology at the University of California, San Francisco. Androgenetic alopecia may respond to finasteride or minoxidil, but the only treatment currently for age-related thinning is minoxidil, she says.
