The evolution of Ethernet capacity has historically been advanced by factors of 10, but experts say that because of reluctance among industry pioneers to pony up research and development dollars, future efforts are likely to be a lot less grandiose. Standard 10X Ethernet increases are being replaced by 4X advancements, as evidenced by the IEEE's decision to place its bets on 400 GE rather than jump straight to terabit Ethernet.
