Adding an assortment of rocks to a garden can create a protective barrier and moisture pocket that nurtures low-growing flowers, writes Dean Fosdick. Rocks also create a sense of tone and texture in a garden, he notes. Meanwhile, experts say rocks that are added to a garden should be set in natural positions and match rocks already in the garden. They also note that weathered, porous rocks are preferable to harder versions.
