System converts carbon emissions into transportation fuel

A new system developed at Sandia National Laboratories could eventually be used to recycle carbon emissions from industrial plants into gasoline, diesel and jet fuel. The Sunshine to Petrol system uses solar energy to convert water and carbon dioxide into the molecular building blocks that make up transportation fuels. Researchers at the lab recently demonstrated the system but note that the technology will not be ready for the market for 15 or 20 years.
