Port of Long Beach bridge is readied for a $1 billion reconstruction

Crews are set to begin a $1 billion reconstruction of the Port of Long Beach's Gerald Desmond Bridge in California. The 42-year-old span has grown obsolete as many ships entering the port have gotten too big to pass beneath it except at low tide. The heavily trafficked bridge is literally crumbling: Nylon mesh has been installed to catch falling concrete.
