For the third year in a row, the Internal Revenue Service is implementing a tax return preparer compliance program, in which it is sending approximately 21,000 letters to preparers it has identified as possibly not being in compliance with their professional responsibilities. It plans to follow up with office visits to about 2,100 of those preparers. The AICPA has been actively engaged with the IRS on this issue, and, as a result, the IRS plans to complete many of the office visits before tax season.
