Northrop's optionally piloted vehicle set for production

Northrop Grumman has won a production go-ahead from an unidentified contractor for its Firebird optionally piloted vehicle. The aircraft is designed for medium-altitude surveillance, and the pilot option will allow it to fly through controlled airspace. Northrop says the Firebird is intended as a "replacement for the aging, inefficient and unsustainable fleet of special-mission aircraft."
