Reducing acid helps ease common heartburn

The two ways to get rid of common heartburn are reducing the acid in the esophagus and reducing acid produced in the stomach. There are lifestyle remedies -- such as avoiding trigger foods, not overeating or not eating too close to bedtime -- and over-the-counter antacids or H2 blockers that lower stomach acid production. Chronic heartburn or gastroesophageal reflux disease is a bigger problem, however, that is diagnosed by a physician through an endoscopy and treated with medication or surgery.
