Study: Transfusion of fresh blood beneficial to cancer patients

A study using rat models found that a transfusion of fresh red blood cells may help prevent cancer recurrence in patients and improve their chances of surviving longer; but a transfusion using blood stored for nine days or more had the opposite effect. The researchers also discovered that the harmful effects of transfused blood are caused by the red blood cells and not the white blood cells as previously thought.
