FBI: Hate crimes based on sexual orientation were up 11% in 2008

Although the overall number of hate crimes in 2008 increased just slightly over the previous year, the number of incidents based on sexual orientation jumped by 11% to 1,617, according to the FBI. Last year, there were 7,780 so-called single-bias incidents, with 51.3% due to racial bias, 19.5% stemming from religious bias, 16.7% because of sexual-orientation bias and 11.5% based on ethnicity/national origin bias, the FBI reported.
