Mentoring program trains Ill. teachers on literacy instruction

More than 130 teachers in the Chicago area are taking part in professional-development programs and weekly mentoring to improve their literacy instruction through the Children's Literacy Initiative. Mentors help teachers stock classroom libraries, select class books to teach specific concepts and group students based on the skills. "You get to reflect on your teaching and what works for the students," first-grade teacher Lucila Ledezma said.
