Private label sales on the rise

Instead of directly competing with Wal-Mart's prices, such grocery chains as Kroger, Albertsons and Giant Eagle are stepping up efforts to build consumer loyalty to store brands. Private-label sales in the U.S. rose by $2.1 billion in 2001, according to the Private Label Manufacturer's Association.
