Study links heart pumps to high death rates

A study of 2,943 Medicare patients found high mortality, repeat hospital stays and expensive medical bills among those who received ventricular assist devices, which are designed to aid failing hearts. The findings suggest that doctors should carefully select those who would greatly benefit from the implantable devices, researchers said.
