The license-extension period for nuclear plants needs to be shorter, Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley said in a letter to a U.S. House panel. Under current rules, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission is allowed to extend a plant's operating license that has up to 20 years left on its original 40-year license. A tighter window would pave the way for closer scrutiny of plant aging, Coakley said.
