Shifting toward nonfiction

As schools transition to the Common Core State Standards, students are reading more historical, scientific and other nonfiction works, a change that has some language arts teachers concerned about reduced exposure to novels, short stories, plays and poetry. Sixth-grade English teacher and author Sara Mosle writes in this opinion article that there are collections of well-written nonfiction essays, articles and material available, including "narrative nonfiction," described as "writing that tells a factual story, sometimes even a personal one, but also makes an argument and conveys information in vivid, effective ways."
