Although fracking technology has been around since the 1940s, it's only relatively recently that its use has exploded. In this article, Mark Crawford explains what fracking is, how the horizontal drilling is done and how explosives fracture the shale -- all before the hydrofracking process that eventually brings the shale to the surface. Modeling the process has helped bring about key advances, Crawford notes.
