8th-graders learn real-world math by designing courtyard

Eighth-graders in a Pennsylvania middle school's Real World Math course recently applied their math skills during a competition to redesign the school's courtyard. Teams plotted their landscape designs on paper and in computerized models. They also calculated the area, volume and perimeter of the courtyard; the cubic feet of flower beds; and the amount of mulch needed to fill them.
