AAFP joins effort to get VA to change nursing care handbook

The AAFP was among the physician organizations and medical associations signing a letter to the Department of Veterans Affairs, urging it to revise a handbook being developed to set guidelines for nursing care in the Veterans Health Administration system. The groups want the handbook to retain policies that support physician-led health care teams and state-based licensure and said they had concerns about a mandate in the draft that would require advanced practice registered nurses in the VHA system to be designated as independent health care providers.
