Mass. district looks to PLCs to improve collaboration, achievement

The Fall River School District in Massachusetts is training its teachers to implement professional learning communities to improve collaboration and enhance student learning. For the past five years, some schools in the district have used the model to allow teachers to analyze student learning and evaluate what works in the classroom. "[W]e needed an all-hands-on-deck school," said Maria Pontes, principal of the Doran Community School. "Everybody is invested in what happens here. We wanted to create a system to share the leadership of our school. It really has helped us to remain focused on our kids."
