Mazda electric car engine could double as a portable generator

The rotary engine from the upcoming "Mazda 2" electric car could serve as a portable electric generator, according to this article. The 330cc, 22-kilowatt single-rotor engine is intended to recharge the car's battery pack, but it could also power stores and homes, said Takashi Suzuki, Mazda's powertrain development manager. "We couldn't find a compact system producing 15kW and that's why we believe there is a market for such an electric generator," Suzuki said.
