Nutritional powerhouse chia sees booming demand

Chia sales are growing at 239% due to demand from cereal, snack and beverage manufacturers that want to take advantage of the seed's nutritional profile, which is packed with protein, fiber, the short-chain omega-3 fatty acid alpha linolenic acid, antioxidants, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, potassium, iron and zinc. Chia production is expected to double to 30,000 tons worldwide, according to Juan de Salas, BeneXia sales and marketing director. "We are seeing consistent double digit growth in demand year on year. This is being driven by increased use in cereals, snacks and beverages," said Nicole Reese, business development manager, Glanbia Nutritionals.
