White House issues space transport policy aimed at boosting private space flight

The Obama administration is calling on private companies to develop space transportation for low-Earth orbit as part of a new policy aimed at freeing NASA to use its resources to develop deep-space transportation. The policy also calls for NASA to encourage commercial space flight with support for private manned spacecraft. "We appreciate this clear delineation of policy in favor of supporting American industry, creating the most effective and efficient space program possible," said former astronaut Michael Lopez-Alegria, who now serves as president of Commercial Spaceflight Federation.
