Lawmakers call for removal of toys with phthalates from shelves

Lawmakers are calling for a reversal of a decision by the Consumer Product Safety Commission that allows stores to continue to sell toys with phthalates as long as the items were made before the ban that will go into effect on Feb. 10. The commission says the lawmakers' intentions for the ban were not made clear, but Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., and others say that the commission's policy could feasibly allow stores to continue to sell toys with phthalates for years to come. The American Chemistry Council has said that it recognized consumer concerns and planned to work with authorities to study public safety.
