Germany extends program for reduced work hours

To head off layoffs, Germany decided to extend a government program that subsidizes employers that keep workers on the job with reduced hours. Economists have credited the program with holding down unemployment in the country. Chancellor Angela Merkel's Cabinet extended the program through 2010 but shortened the maximum period for benefits from two years to 18 months.
