Seats improperly installed on several American Airlines jets were installed by third-party maintenance crews. Hiring out maintenance services is an industry shift that helps airlines reduce costs, and the Federal Aviation Administration requires that airlines have their own supervisors to oversee any contracted maintenance work. "Our competitors have forged a path of having their maintenance completed where it is most cost-effective," airline spokeswoman Andrea Huguely said. "We must similarly adapt."
