Holiday shoppers go big for discounted Blu-ray discs

Shoppers at a Wal-Mart store in Oceanside, Calif., were buying dozens of Blu-ray discs priced less than $2 apiece on Thanksgiving Day as the holiday-shopping season kicked began, this article notes. The National Retail Federation estimates that 247 million shoppers flocked to bricks-and-mortar stores and onto websites over the weekend, compared with 226 million in 2011. Nearly 40% of their purchases were Blu-ray discs, books, DVDs, music CDs and video games, while 37.7% of purchases were Blu-ray players and other consumer electronics, the group reported.
