Shell nears breakthrough in commercializing polycarbonate feedstock

Shell Chemicals is working to scale its proprietary process for making diphenyl carbonate and is "very, very close" to a breakthrough, said Ben van Beurden, executive vice president at the Shell unit. The DPC would be used instead of phosgene as a feedstock for producing polycarbonate. "Polycarbonate is quite a strongly growing sector, and we need to participate in it to claim our space in the supply chain," van Beurden said.
