A Facebook version of Google's Adsense is now "inevitable":

Changes to Facebook's privacy rules reveal it intends to use the data it collects from its users to target them with ads outside the social network, according to this article. Faced with a low click-thru rate for in-network ads, the company is trying to please investors by using what an Andreessen Horowitz executive called the "embedded option" of an outside ad sales network. "An external ad network is inevitable. ... With an already huge base of advertisers bidding on CPCs, it is impossible for most other ad networks to compete on publisher payouts," says Andreessen Horowitz partner Chris Dixon.
