Future of N.Y. airstrip uncertain

Mattituck Air Base is the only public airstrip for the North Fork, N.Y. region, and home to about a dozen airplanes. But after an airplane engine overhaul facility closed at the airport, pilots are concerned the airstrip could be closed, too. "We're just hoping and praying it stays open," said Fred Martin, a business owner and pilot. "If they shut it down, we wouldn't have an airport on the North Fork anymore. We're hoping the town does something with it."
