Bioengineers work to build a better egg

A California-based food technology company and a group of Silicon Valley investors including Bill Gates and Peter Thiel are advancing an ambitious project to reduce the human demand for eggs by engineering a plant-based alternative that offers all the benefits of the real thing without any of the environmental fallout. Hampton Creek Foods' founder Josh Tetrick -- who calls eggs one of the world's most inefficient foods -- has tapped biochemists, food scientists and software engineers in the hopes of creating a virtually eggless future.
