Ill. district predicts dip in meal participation after price increase

Officials in an Illinois district are anticipating a temporary decrease in the number of students purchasing school meals when they increase meal prices for elementary-school students by 25 cents and eliminate tiered pricing for the upper grades. "It usually takes six to 12 months to recover from a price increase," said Meghan Gibbons, director of nutrition services. "Some kids will start bringing their lunch from home, but after time many will decide that paying an extra quarter is not that bad," she added.
