FDA warns of methadone painkiller overdoses

The FDA warned health officials to guard against overdoses of the painkiller methadone, saying the narcotic can linger in the body for more than two days. The agency said it also updated the label for Dolophine, made by Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals subsidiary Roxane Laboratories; the warning specifically stated some patients beginning treatment with methadone died or had serious side effects due to overdosing.
