The purchase of The Philadelphia Inquirer, spearheaded by local PR magnate Brian Tierney, suggests a trend in local ownership of newspapers. The Tribune Co. is hinting it might sell the Los Angeles Times, and area billionaires Ron Burkle and David Geffen have expressed interest in acquiring the newspaper. Can papers that have proven unprofitable for chains make money as independents?
