U.S. military to unveil powerful upgrades to GPS technology

The U.S. military hopes powerful upgrades to its GPS satellite navigation technology will keep the system ahead of its European rival project that just received funding. The U.S. will unveil GPS III satellites which will have about 500 times the transmitter power of the current system and provide benefits in navigational accuracy to both military and civil users. The first phase of the U.S. update is scheduled to launch in 2013.
