A hospital in San Diego grows a musical rooftop garden

The new rooftop garden at the Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego seeks to comfort the hospital's patients by depicting a few bars of "Ode to Joy" from Beethoven's Symphony No. 9. Landscape architect Glen Schmidt chose the musical piece of "Ode to Joy" as a pattern for his design because of its inspiring message and arranged potted plants to resemble musical notes. Hospital officials also included 20,000 plants because studies have demonstrated that gardens can improve a patient's medical condition.
