Intelligent machines help manufacturers go green

Increased process automation and the widespread use of intelligent systems and devices could help plant operators slash their energy usage in coming years, says German manufacturing expert Reinhard Hüppe. In Germany alone, smart systems and process improvements could trim plants' energy bills by 50 billion kWh per year, reducing plants' operating costs and environmental impact. "The technical capabilities already exist but must be put to better use," Hüppe says.
