American manufacturing companies live in a state of "perpetual recession" due to global competition, industry experts say, and that has forced plant managers to embrace lean strategies in order to stay afloat. Companies such as Campbell Soup are seeking to save tens of millions of dollars by cutting costs and boosting productivity -- an effective strategy, but one that could mean the firms return to pre-recessionary production levels without hiring back laid-off workers.
