Republicans eye $3.3B in Calif. HSR funds for diversion

Several Republican House members from California are mounting an effort to block the $3.3 billion in federal grants appropriated for the state's $98.5 billion bullet train, saying the money would be more useful elsewhere -- such as for highway construction. Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., has filed a bill to halt federal funding for the project and mandate an extensive federal audit. "We can't afford it when we have a $15 trillion debt that continues to grow and California is broke," said Rep. Jeff Denham, R-Calif. "The cost of it continues to balloon out of control with no private investors willing to put money into it."
