Roof shingles to be reused as asphalt pavement in Iowa county

The Cedar Rapids/Linn County Agency in Iowa has teamed up with roofing company Eastern Iowa Construction to recycle roof shingles to be used in a road-asphalt mixture. The initiative aims to divert 6,000 tons of shingles from the landfill next year, said Joe Horaney of the Solid Waste Agency. The recycled shingles could be purchased by nearby asphalt firms since they cut the cost of paving mixtures by reducing the amount of the petroleum needed for the road material.
