Pakistan's ostensibly secular government is about to cut funds and "suggest steps to restrict" the country's many madrassas, or Islamic schools. Madrassas, long a breeding ground for religious extremism -- the Taliban has its roots in Pakistan's madrassas -- offer a viable educational alternative to Pakistan's underfunded public school system; proponents say they answer to a higher power than the government.
